Spring Beckons…

The Huidekoper Room welcomes the arrival of warmer weather, as the large Magnolia blooms in the background.

With the arrival of warmer weather, the Huidekoper Room’s private deck is suddenly a popular place.  The Magnolia tree planted in 1920 was in full bloom this past week and soon the leaves will pop and underneath the Magnolia branches, the deck will develop the quiet ambiance of a tree house.

The Huidekoper’s private doorway opens onto this lovely space where you can start your day with the joyous chirping of birds and a nice cup of coffee in the morning, read under the umbrella in the afternoon or savor a nice glass of wine in the evening hours.  The private deck allows for the possibility of all…

So, while there are “many” other outdoor spaces for guest relaxation on the grounds of Mayor Lord’s House Bed and Breakfast - remember the “private deck” is just for those lucky enough to have reserved the Huidekoper room!

There’s a “New Book Club in Town”…

A warm "welcome" is offered to all...
A warm “Welcome” is offered to all…
Mayor Lords House Bed and Breakfast, invites all interested “Readers” to join us in the Greatroom of Mayor Lord’s, where the warm and inviting space beckons you forth.  The house has a rich history of being a home to “Readers”.  Built in 1920 by Mayor Lewis L. Lord, a grandson of Samual and Rebecca Lord. The historical significance of Samual Lord is that of an early settler arriving with David Meads army.  As a soldier settler he was given a land alotment, later married Rebecca and together they built their lives.  Over time they became strong members of the community and much later Samual and Rebecca Lord gave the land for the founding of Allegheny College. The gifted land is where Bently Hall and the old campus are situated.  It stretches from Park Avenue to Main Street where the monument of ”Lord’s Gate” provides a window to the original Lord Family land and honors that gift.

His grandson Lewis grew up with an appreciation of intellectual pursuits and community service.  He later became Mayor of Meadville and built a home on family land two blocks from the gifted Allegheny College land, at 654 Park Avenue.  The house was built with a small but well loved family library, and now all these years later as a bed and breakfast Mayor Lord’s House opens its doors and its library, inviting you to join us as we read a new book each quarter. We have chosen “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho for our first quarter. We meet the 4th Sunday of each month at 3:00 pm (except for holiday weekends – when we choose an alternte date).  Our next meeting date is November 20th, 2011 - due to the Thanksgiving weekend.

Allegheny College Freshman Arrive!!!

It has been a busy weekend for all, as the Allegheny College Freshman arrive on campus.  They have literally  ”hit the brick lined streets” of Meadville running; shopping for last minute dorm supplies, dining out with their parents and learning how to find their way around the Allegheny Campus and town.

Parents are busy helping to unpack and fix up dorm rooms and are getting in a few last hugs before they head back to hometowns all around the world.  For me as a Bed and Breakfast owner meeting guests from all backgrounds and locations throughout the world, has broadened my understanding and view of the world profoundly.

Tomorrow Freshman will start the orientation process on the Allegheny College Campus, which will include many informational sessions for parents too.

Mayor Lord’s House Bed and Breakfast is happy to welcome all Freshman to Allegheny College.

Have a great year!

The fair board has a proven record and has developed a strong reputation for picking winners!

The Crawford County Fair features plenty of amusementrides, displays and lots of good food – truck and tractor pulls, demolition derbies, agriculcural and livestock entries and judging.

It is the largest agricultural county fair in the State of Pennsylvania.

From, home made pies to rides, along with entertainment and barn displays – Crawford County has a wonderful fair!

See you next year!

Welcome Back Allegheny Students…

Mayor Lord's provides a healthy Breakfast Buffet. Be sure to take time to enjoy a delicious Breakfast with your Parents!

Welcome back Allegheny Students, Meadville Pa. has missed you!

You bring an energy and an enthusiasm that is contagious –and a vibrancy that is a welcome addition to the “Spirit of the Meadville”.

I had a great summer here at the B&B –nice and busy.  Full of summer travelers coming to the area to visit family and friends, or in search of summer fun.

We appreciate every guest that arrives on our doorstep but find a very special connection with Allegheny College.  Its the simple continuity that starts when students come in as prospectives, and the relationship develops over the years –from freshman year on through graduation, we see you grow. Later, many of you will return as Alums, coming back to Allegheny for an occasional reunion or perhaps for a wedding at Ford Chapel and your college year connections will be renewed.

Quite simply –over the years here at Mayor Lord’s B&B we get to know you and your families and we find it ”wonderfully inspiring” to see you grow to meet your potential, as you develop and stretch your interests and intellect.

“Welcome Back Allegheny Students” (and Parents too) — Have a great year!

Garden Fairies…

Time to plant the garden... Annuals for color, veggies and herbs for the raised beds and strawberries for me!

I was hoping the “Garden Fairies” would help me get the grounds of Mayor Lord’s House Bed and Breakfast under control.

However, that just did not happen.  And while it has seemed “especially” difficult to get anything done in the garden this year, I must admit that the real truth is that in ”every year” it is “especially” difficult for me to get it all organized …most noticibly in the beginning as the seasons are changing.

Why is it so difficult?  Weather, procrastination, frost risk etc… are all factors at varying times and in varying degrees, therefore plans get tossed about.

On one day I may be thinking that I am ahead of schedule and then the next I awaken to find nonstop rain.  So starts the seasonal dance of opposition.  When I find time I could spend in the garden – the weather does not cooperate.  Then when the weather is good – suddenly, I don’t have a moment to spare.

Almost as dependable is that moment when I think it is looking less than hopeful, and then in the next moment I regain hope –which brings an unexpected convergence of possibilities which come together to create momentum.  It is in that moment of hope that the sun suddenly shines for a few days, I manage to find the time to complete the raised bed prep work, a few garden helpers arrive upon my doorstep…  all of these elements provide just enough forward movement to get me back on track.

Soon it is time to head out to a few of the many greenhouses in the area, in search of this years plants and then I am well on the way into phase two – which quickly pulls everything together for the summer months.

Earlier this evening, I put the veggies and herbs in the raised beds and I now expect to make great progress over the next few days with weeding and the planting.

I look forward to planting a nice selection of  yellow, orange and red toned marigolds to add a little color to the grounds –and although I am still undecided on placement, I know that I am getting it together and in reality I am right on schedule –with what can only be referred to as my “normal” seasonal schedule!

The true reality of this season is that with each step of progress in the garden, I find that my enjoyment of the grounds and the ever-changing rotation of tasks increases.  The sun invigorates and the work strengthens.

Who knows maybe the “Garden Fairies” or at least the “Fireflies” will come to assist and light up my garden when I am done… those evening with the fireflies are pure magic.

Small Comforts Pamper Guests…

A lovely reading nook overlooks the sunken garden in the back yard. The light privacy screen creates the illusion of romance, perfect for curling up with your favorite book. Other private areas for guests are the deck off of the Huidekoper Room, the side porch and the sunken garden. Each space allows guests a nice retreat space...

At Mayor Lord’s House Bed and Breakfast, we bring to our guests all the comforts of home.  Then we take it up a notch and bring in the many other small comforts that help to create a sense of being pampered.  Soft music, handmade soaps, fluffy white towels and the list goes on… constantly evolving.

We want our guests to allow themselves the time and space to truely relax and to breathe in the ambiance of all that is offered at the Inn.  Comfort, History, Relaxation,  and a strong focus on guest comfort make  Mayor Lord’s House Bed & Breakfast the perfect ”Home away from Home”.

For each individual person the little things that stand out as important to them, will be as different as the guests themselves.

The one little thing that I know is  enjoyed  by all guests is the sunshine – and for this, I can take no bows.

However, while visiting during the summer months, you are welcome to experience the various outside private guest areas;  especially created for you to read,  relax or perhaps enjoy a nice glass of wine, as we “all” celebrate the change in seasons.

Readers will especially enjoy these spaces, so –if you love to read, imerse yourself in one of the various reading nooks, which I am sure you will agree are quite luxurious, you can bring your own book – or choose one from the Mayor Lord’s House library!

Meeting the needs of guests is our top priority and how we accomplish this is in a constant state of evolution.  In my early years I was greatly assisted by the simple placement of  a ”suggestion” box.

As an Innkeeper in those early years, I must also admit that I was a bit heartbroken, when reading the suggestions –because it seemed that there were so many.  But, I listened to any and all  suggestions, and I would implement a change either right away or have it in the back of my mind for later, if it required a larger capital outlay.  Some of the suggestions were simple and practical, others were not feasible.

My highest recommendation for an excellent summer read; “The Elf Queen” by a local Meadville author writing under the pen name Lyndi Alexander. After you finish you will want to run out and get the “Elf Child” her second book!

One request was to have lots of mirrors available, so my “girl guests” could get ready without conflict in the morning.  With that suggestion, I began to look for just the right mirror for each room and when found, a new mirror would suddenly appear; in the guest room, great room, bathroom, etc.   As I started implementing the suggestions, some of my early repeat guests soon knew that I was listening – so of course they gave me more suggestions…

My ego did go through a little push/pull with each suggestion read, but the end result is, my awareness of what is important to my guests increased and I responded.  Eventually – in the last several years, I received no suggestions and have now replaced the suggestion box with a candy bowl!

I have found that it is the small comforts that pamper guests, and are remembered.
